USA 2008: The Not so Great Depression

I think perhaps it sends a mixed message to declare the great depression 2008 right under an ad giving away free computers and electronics. If we are to compare the current economic crisis (yes, it is a crisis) to the Great Depression, we should at least have some historical perspective about it in terms of scope. America is still the most prosperous nation on earth.

Where the real comparison does come in is in the reason for the depression. Consumer debt, unregulated banks that ran amok and in this case high fuel prices. The latter being the cause of reduced spending such as was caused by the dust bowl.

All the cards are in place for a major drop, but it isn't what it was. We can stave off this crisis if we try. It isn't up to the government but rather to individuals. Pay off the consumer debt and save by cutting spending. The American ideal seems to be getting more money, but spending less money on needless things is also a good way to stay strong. If people have a savings, and don't have debt, then when the hit comes, they can take it until things level off, which they always do.
